Christel Hydén-Granskog
A Helsinki doctor who carried single embryo transfer into frozen embryo cycles, and into the study of the earliest human development.
From genetics to embryos. Christel Hydén-Granskog is a Finnish doctor at the Reproductive Medicine Unit of Helsinki University Hospital. Her first papers, in the early 1990s, mapped the genes behind a rare inherited skin condition in Finnish families. She then turned to reproductive medicine, studying hormone signals in cells from the ovary.
Part of the Helsinki team. She co-wrote the 1999 Family Federation study that opens Room 7. She also co-wrote the 2001 Helsinki paper on single transfer with embryo freezing. In 2005 she led a study of 1,647 frozen embryo transfers at her hospital. Multiple deliveries were 21.9 per cent after two frozen embryos and 2.0 per cent after one. When a single embryo was chosen on purpose, the delivery rate was as good as with two.
Watching the first days. Later work took her into basic science. With colleagues in Helsinki and Stockholm she studied how the genes of a human embryo first switch on. She also studied small RNA molecules in eggs and early embryos. She has also contributed to Nordic surveys of preimplantation genetic testing.
