1984: Two more pregnancies from frozen embryos

G. H. Zeilmaker and his colleagues reported two pregnancies from embryos that had been frozen whole and thawed.

The story

Within a year of the Melbourne report, a second team showed that frozen embryos could start pregnancies.

Their short paper is one of the steps by which embryo freezing moved from a single laboratory to clinics around the world. Today frozen embryo transfer is a routine part of IVF.
